A hallmark feature is the handcrafted bedheads, which sets a bold artistic statement for the interior decor. The motif represents ‘Mauao’ or ‘the Mount’, the region’s most recognisable natural feature. The iconic view of ‘Mauao’ is taken from the approach to Tauranga harbour.
‘Mauao’ has always been a welcoming sight to sailors and coastal boaters, and nowadays to cruise ships. In te reo Māori, the meaning of Tauranga is ‘resting place’ or ‘safe anchorage’.
